Craig Phillip Sitter
September 15, 1949 - February 1, 2022
Craig P. Sitter, age 72, of Oshkosh, died peacefully on Monday February 1, 2022 at his home, surrounded by family. He was born in Milwaukee on September 15, 1949 the son of Hon. James V. and Jean M. Sitter. He attended St. Mary’s Grade School in Oshkosh through 6th grade, when he was diagnosed by the Mayo Clinic to have Autism. At that time, he went to St. Michael's School in La Crosse, Wisconsin until the age of 18. Because there were no programs or treatment for Autism at that time, doctors advised placement at Winnebago Mental Health Institute and Parkview Health Center, where he resided for over 18 years. He then lived in group homes in the community with LSS Towards Tomorrow and Phillipe Pinel. Craig, in his youth, had a fantastic memory with total recall of information that was important to him. Part of his personality and behaviors were reflected in the movie “Rain Man” that his physician at the time was a consultant for the production. Craig liked to bowl and would keep track of four players individual scores in his head that he balanced with the scorekeeper on paper. He was proud of a high game of 218. He also was an excellent basketball player, with an impressive drive and jump shot. With his great memory he was very proficient in several card games, but no trips to Las Vegas. He also typed and hand wrote letters and cards that he sent to anyone he knew. Over the years, all the overprescribed medications took their toll. His health suffered from multiple side effects in his final years. In July 2008, he started dialysis and moved to an apartment with 24/7 care with MAGi Support Services. He could no longer do his daily bike trips to Cherry Tree Auto, Sundquist’s Flooring, McDonalds, Subway, Pick n Save and Kwik Trip. The people there were always friendly and kind to him, giving him coffee or soda. Craig was generous in return always tipping clerks and wait staff with whatever spare change he had. A special thanks to the many caregivers that Craig had over the years, and all those that went above and beyond for him. Survivors include his sister Kat Hughes of Greendale Wisconsin, brothers Steven (Gabriela) Sitter of Leszczyny, Poland, (TJ) Thomas (Robin) Sitter of Ripon and David (Amy) Sitter of Oshkosh. He also had a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Neil Lorge, three uncles, two aunts, two cousins, a sister-in-law and a niece. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday February 12, 2022 at 11:00 AM in Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (Saint Mary Site) with Father Jerome Pastors officiating. There will be a visitation for family and friends at the church on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the hour of services. Burial will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oshkosh Mid-Morning Kiwanis-iPads for Autism Project, with checks payable to “Morning Kiwanis Foundation -iPads” mailed to Morning Kiwanis at PO Box 554 Oshkosh, WI 54903-0554 or any charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the many caregivers that assisted Craig over the years, MAGi Support Services and staff of the DaVita Oshkosh West Dialysis Clinic.
