Mary Ellen Horejs

February 7, 1940 - May 18, 2019

Mary Ellen Horejs (nee Luebke) was called to Heaven on Saturday, May 18, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 7, 1940 to Rose and Vernon J. Luebke in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. She married Roger W. Horejs in 1960 and spent most of her years as a "south-sider" in Oshkosh until moving to Prairie Home in Menasha where she spent her final years. Mary graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1958 and worked at the Radford Company before staying home to raise her three daughters. She then worked for 26 years at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh, serving as a secretary in Medical Records, Social Services and Spiritual Services until she retired in 2008. Mary enjoyed spending time crocheting, golfing, spending time with her grandchildren, playing slots at the casino on occasion, getting her nails done with her daughters every few weeks at the Nail Palace in Appleton and attending Mass at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Neenah with her daughters and grandchildren every Sunday. Mary loved to travel when she was younger, and fondly remembered taking trips with her late husband, Roger, to Scotland to golf (the trip of a lifetime for them!), their honeymoon in Florida, a trip to Disney in Florida with her daughters and grandchildren, and countless trips up north to family cottages in Conover, WI. She will be remembered for her kind heart and warm smile, her always-neatly-painted pink nails and her charming personality that made people smile when they were around her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; her sister, Barb (Rehbein), and brother-in-law, Ed Rehbein; parents, Rose and Vernon Luebke, and infant great-nephew, Nathan Barter. She is survived by one sister, Pat Seibold (Carl); Oshkosh; and her three daughters, Cathy Kuckuk, Monroe, Patti Purcell (Dave), Neenah, and Laura Lambert (Dave), Neenah, and six grandchildren: Madeline and Graham Kuckuk, Nicholas and Sam Purcell, and Valerie and Mitchell Lambert. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mary on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 11:30 am in St. Jude Parish, St. Vincent Catholic Church, corner of Oregon St. and South Park Ave. in Oshkosh. A time of visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 10:30 am until the time of Mass. The Mass will be concelebrated by Rev Mike Ingold and Deacon Pat Gelhar. Private family committal services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Oshkosh. Visitors attending the service on Friday are encouraged to wear pink which was Mary’s favorite color. Flowers may be sent to the church in memoriam, or friends and family can also consider making a donation in Mary’s name to the ThedaCare Hospice Foundation or Mercy Foundation. Special thanks to the loving and kind team of caregivers at Prairie Home in Menasha where she spent her last years and to the ThedaCare hospice staff.
