STANLEY JOHN SPANBAUER

May 7, 1931 - December 18, 2018

Stanley John “Stan” Spanbauer passed into his eternal reward on Tuesday December 18, 2018 at Oakwood Manor in Oshkosh. Stan was born on May 7, 1931 in Oshkosh, the son of Killian and Agnes Spanbauer. He attended Sacred Heart Parish grade school, and graduated from Oshkosh High school in 1949. He proudly served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Korean Conflict, and always spoke about how his time in Korea helped him to become aware of his own strengths and abilities. Upon returning, he was married in 1954 and began working for the Soo Line Railroad. Utilizing the GI Bill, he attended UW-Oshkosh and attained his teaching credentials. Stan was a teacher at Pulaski High School from 1959-1962 and at Winneconne Middle School from 1962-1964. In 1965, he accepted a position as a Communication Skills teacher at the Oshkosh Technical Institute, later to become Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC). He served as Vice President of Academic Affairs at FVTC in 1967-1982, and was named President of FVTC in 1982, serving until his retirement from FVTC in 1993. During his time at FVTC, Stan earned his Master and Doctorate Degrees, as well as writing several books and teaching leadership courses at Marian College, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stout. After leaving FVTC, Stan traveled the world as an Executive Consultant for Performance Horizons and as President of USA Group National Quality Academy. He then volunteered his time with the Unified Catholic Schools of Oshkosh, helping to develop a strategic plan for the system and serving as System President from 2001-2005. While at UCS/Lourdes, Stan developed a true love for middle school and high school arts and athletics. He attended numerous sporting and musical or dramatic events, appreciating the talents and dedication of his grandchildren and many, many others. These were truly memories that he cherished the most. Surviving Stan are his children Debra (Mark) Smedley, Mark, Paul, Julie (Tom) Berger and Jerry. Grandchilden Zachary and Jacqueline Smedley, Adam Spanbauer and Amanda (Ariel) Ruby, Jay and Justin (Amanda) Spanbauer, Jessica, Ben, Sam and Joelle Berger, Dylan and Lily Spanbauer. Mom to his 5 children Rosemary (Boots) Spanbauer, Brother Bob (Rita) Spanbauer, numerous nieces and nephews, and very special friends Jo Hillman, Lynn Thill, David (Sarah) Spanbauer, his golf buddies, and many, many others too numerous to mention. Warm and special thanks to the wonderful staff at Oakwood Manor and Heartland Hospice. He was preceded in death by his parents Agnes and Killian Spanbauer, sisters Elaine (Ray) Pelky and Germaine (Bill) Morasch, and brothers Greg (Sally) Spanbauer and Killian (Irma) Spanbauer. Funeral services for for Stan will be held on Saturday December 22, at 12:00 PM in St Jude the Apostle Catholic Church (Sacred Heart site) with the Rev. Louis Galomari officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:30 AM until the hour of services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Stanley Spanbauer Scholarship Fund at Lourdes High School or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
