Michael Frank Nowland III

Michael Frank Nowland III was born in Packwaukee Township on May 26, 1932 to Gladys (Nye) and Michael Frank Nowland II. Michael attended schools at Kingsley, Packwaukee and Montello and joined the US Army at the age of 17. Michael was stationed at Fort Riley, KS for basic training, Fort Bellvor, VA for heavy equipment engineer training, and finally Fort Benning, GA for jump training. Following processing in Camp Stoneman, CA Michael was deployed to Korea where as a paratrooper he made 74 reconnaissance jumps during his time there. Following Korea he was stationed in Alaska where he was part of a unit building radar sites for the military. He later was selected as a Centry for the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Following his military service Michael returned home where he worked as a guard at Badger Ordinance in Baraboo, WI. In 1953 he met his wife, Joyce Frost and was married in Princeton on June 12, 1954. They moved back to Oshkosh where he worked for Mercury Marine and raised three sons, David (Christine), Jay (Gail) and Scott Nowland. Michael's first wife, Joyce preceded him in death on February 16, 1989; they were married nearly 35 years. In 1994 Michael married Angeline (Kelm) Freitag. Michael had many interests. He was a Scout Leader, baseball coach, and an avid outdoorsman. His main love was deer hunting with his three sons and best friend Donald Otto. Michael was a member of both Sacred Heart Catholic and St. John Catholic Churches, and served on the Catholic School Board at Sacred Heart School. He spent many years working with the Lourdes High School Booster Club and could be seen at every sporting event over the years his three sons attended school there. Michael is survived by his wife Angeline, his sons, David, Jay and Scott; stepdaughter, Robin (Gary) Zimmerman, seven grandchildren, Kathryn-Grace, Krystal, Chiffon (Joel), and Shallyn, Ashley (Kaine), Jordan (Natalie), and Haley Nowland, and five step grandchildren, Christopher and Casey Lutz, and Seth, John, and Maddie Zimmerman. Michael is also survived by his loving sister, Bonnie Cotter of St. Joseph, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents Gladys and Michael and his brother, Francis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Michael on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Jude Parish, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the corner of Knapp and 6th Streets in Oshkosh, with the Rev. Fr. William Van DeKreeke as celebrant. Entombment with full military honors will follow the Mass at Lake View Memorial Park. A time of visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
