Catherine A. Smick
Catherine A. (Beck) Smick of Appleton WI, passed suddenly Thursday, November 24, 2016. Her husband, Jim Smick, subsequently passed 4 day later. Catherine born April 15, 1936 in Oshkosh to the late Frank and Ruth (Nebel) Beck. Catherine married James F Smick July 21, 1956 at St. Mary’s Church in Oshkosh, WI. Catherine is survived by children: James (Marcia), Cathysue (Kent), Stephen (Dawn), Thomas, Jeffrey (Sharon); grandchildren: Amanda, Kevin, Daniel, Alexandra, Stephanie, Timothy Kafka; step grandchildren: Christie, Jackie, Allie Schmidt; and brothers, Jim (Ellie), Jack Beck.
In addition to raising 5 children when her husband’s career brought them to St. Charles, IL, Catherine became involved in St. Patrick’s Church music liturgy, and later became Music Director at Resurrection Parish Church, Wayne, IL. She organized a contemporary music group and wrote original guitar, organ, violin and flute arrangements. She sang for services and special occasions, was named Woman of the Year for contributions to faith through music. She was a very talented artist and finished several compositions in oils and water colors. She donated much time and talents towards Delnor hospital wellness through the Candy Stripers volunteers group making the hospital a happier and friendlier place for patients. She was full time student 2 years at Elgin Community College studying Nursing, and finally working at B. Dolton Book’s where her love for books, especially Vincent van Gogh was nurtured.
Catherine retired with her husband to Oregon, WI in a dream home designed by Catherine. Their home was the hub for family holiday gatherings and grandchildren visits. Catherine joyfully supported her family and shared her love for music, books and art with them.
Most recently she with her husband took residence at Appleton Retirement Center, Appleton WI. Catherine was cherished by the residents for her warmth and loving smile. For group events, she and Jim were sought after, Catherine for her beautiful singing voice and Jim for his rich delivery of readings.
Catherine will be deeply missed by all who knew her. We wish her the “Light and Love” she in turn wished for us.
A memorial service in honor of James and Catherine’s shall be Friday, December 9th, 12:30 PM at Fiss & Bills-Poklasny Funeral Home, 865 S Westhaven Dr., Oshkosh, WI 54904. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 11:00 AM until the hour of services. Memorials can be made in their names to the Arthritis Foundation or Alzheimer Foundation of America.
