Daniel Orland Lynch's Obituary
Daniel Orland Lynch, age 77, died on October 12, 2018. He was born on October 21, 1940 in Menominee, Michigan to Bernard and Helen (Wagner) Lynch. He grew up on a farm near McAllister, WI. In 1958 he graduated with honors from Our Lady of Lourdes High school in Marinette WI. He then went to school for two years at Marinette Teachers college. Dan got his Bachelor of Science degree from Oshkosh State college in 1962. While there he met his wife of 55 years, Dolores Flasch. They were married November 24, 1962. They had four children Shawn, Gregory, Laura and Sarah.
Dan then taught Middle School Science and Math in Ripon for 2 years. He left Ripon to go to the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he earned his PHD in Educational Psychology in 1968.
Dan started teaching at the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh in January 1968 as a professor in the College of Education and Human Services. He worked there until he retired in 1999. His main professional interest was working to prevent smoking by youths. He did research on patterns of youthful smoking in the late 80s, which moved him to organize the Winnebago County Tobacco Free Coalition in 1992. They worked toward passage of new legislation and enforcement of existing bans on smoking on school grounds. This was an area of active interest for Dan for many years after he retired.
Dan was also a member of St. Raphael’s parish, Knights of Columbus, Serra Club for the promotion of vocations and Candlelight club. He also supported United Cerebral Palsy and the United Way.
Dan loved science and nature. He enjoyed hunting for morel mushrooms in the spring and watching the bright reds of the sugar maples as they changed color in the fall. Dan was an avid reader and loved to get in discussions about the books he read. Dan treasured the time he spent with family and friends. Especially the Lynch Family Reunions and playing sheepshead with the Flaschs.
His memory will be cherished by his daughter Sarah (Andrew) Olson of Cross Plains, son-in-law Roger Hinze, daughter-in-law, Susan Landers-Lynch, grandchildren Ian, Calista, Savannah and Alexandra. He is survived by five brothers, three sisters, eleven brothers and sisters in law, and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents Bernard Lynch and Helen Lynch; wife Dolores Lynch; sons Shawn Lynch and Gregory Lynch; daughter, Laura Hinze; and brother Timothy Lynch.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Dan on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 11:00 am at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, 830 S. Westhaven Drive in Oshkosh with Reverend Fr. Tom Long as celebrant. A time of visitation and support will be held for the Lynch Family from 9:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at St. Isadore Catholic Cemetery in Clyman Wisconsin.
