Donald Wood's Obituary
Donald L. Wood Sr, age 77 of Oshkosh, WI passed away February 8, 2012 at Aurora Hospital with family by his side. He was born December 13, 1934 in Grantsburg, WI. but later relocated to LaCrosse where he met and married the love of his life, Raylene Soukup, in 1952 Don was a decorated US Navy veteran who served honorably from 1952-1954 during the Korean War on the Essex and USS Intrepid carriers. He was larger than life and believed having fun was as important as work. He was also a great role- model, husband and father and a life-loving person with a wonderful sense of humor. An avid sportsman, Don played his favorite contact sport (football) as a tight end and middle-linebacker in high school and for the University of LaCrosse, his alma mater. Other interests included hunting,fishing and his labrador retrievers which he trained to hunt and compete in AKC field trials. Although he rarely mentioned it, he was an accomplished violinist at an early age. After moving to Oshkosh in 1960, Don sold capitol equipment and later started a commercial and residential real estate company where he worked until his retirement. He is survived by his wife Raylene, of 60 years, his brother Leonard Wood of LaCrosse, four children: Diane (Dennis) Krueger, Berlin, Karen Gamwell, Appleton, Sandy (Melvin) Cerney Berlin and David (Tammy) Wood of Berlin; 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Donald Wood Jr. The family wishes to thank Dr. Alzoubi, Dr Al-bitar and the ICU staff at Aurora Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion Don received. Memorial services for Don will be Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 1:00pm in the Fiss and Bills Poklasny Funeral Home, the Rev. William Van De Kreeke officiating. Family and friends may call at the Funeral Home Saturday from 11:00 am until the time of services. A Memorial has been established.
