Dr. Eugene T. “Doc” Sonnleitner - Obituary
Dr. Eugene T. Sonnleitner, age 86, of Oshkosh, passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2016. He was born on October 23, 1929 in Oshkosh, son of the late John N. and Mary (Maier) Sonnleitner. E.T. “Doc” was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Patricia Ann Cody Sonnleitner. He was also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Sr. Mary Theorita, John (Theresa), Carl (Henrietta), Harold (Mary), Otto (Julia), Elizabeth (Walter O’Connell), Alois (Millie) and George (Cecelia).
Doc’s memory will always be cherished by his five children: Jeff (Kim) Sonnleitner, and Tracy (Larry) Norum of Oshkosh; Pamela (Del) Canon of Wauwatosa, Kathleen Maszk of Appleton, and Susan (Peter) Coffaro of Littleton, Co. He was beloved by his grandchildren: Lindsey (Jay) Kilburg, Bradley (Jenni) Sonnleitner, Erin Canon, Shawn Maszk (Jocelyn Harvell), Matthew and Maria Coffaro, Evan and Lane Norum, and his four great-grandchildren: Mason and Logan Kilburg, Hayden Sonnleitner and Noelani Maszk. He is further survived by his brother-in-law, Paul Cody of Phoenix, AZ, and many nieces and nephews.
Doc attended Sacred Heart School and was a member of Sacred Heart Parish. He attended Oshkosh High School and UW-Oshkosh (then Oshkosh State Teachers College) before earning his doctorate degree in dentistry from Marquette University in 1954 where he was a member of Delta Sigma Delta, and served as Class President. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1950, and upon completion of dental school he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S Navy Dental Corps, attached to the U.S.S. Delta. Following his tour of duty, he returned to Oshkosh and began his dental practice in 1956.
Doc was civically minded throughout his entire life, working hard to better the lives of those around him. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, District Deputy, Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator and Bingo Chairman, and served on the State K. of C. Board as State Warden, State Advocate and State Deputy. During his tenure with the Knights, Doc developed their Pro-Life Campaign, Disaster Relief Fund, and established the Tootsie Roll Program for the mentally disabled.
He was on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Special Olympics and was past President of both the Wisconsin and Winnebago Association of Retarded Citizens (ARC). In 1979 he was awarded International Volunteer of the Year by the Kennedy Foundation for his extensive work with the Special Olympics.
From 1968 through 1972, Doc served on the Common Council for the City of Oshkosh and was Vice-Mayor. He was a member of the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce, Elks Lodge, Toastmasters, Kiwanis, the American and Wisconsin Dental Societies, and Vice-President of the Lion’s Club. He was a Boy Scout for over 40 years (Order of the Arrow), and served as Den Leader, Cub Master, Finance Committee Chair, District Commissioner, and was a Camp Fire Girls Leader. He chaired the Oshkosh 4th of July Parade for 20 years and was active with the EAA and the Oshkosh Sawdust Days Committee. He was past President of the Oshkosh North Booster Club.
Doc was always proud of his Naval service, and was a member of the American Legion, VFW Post 1908, Catholic War Veterans, AMVETS, Vietnam Veterans of America, Oshkosh Patriotic Council, Winnebago County Veteran Affairs Committee, U.S. Navy Memorial Association, U.S. Navy Reserve Officers Association, Pearl Harbor Memorial Association, and was President of the U.S.S. Delta Shipmates Association for which he also edited the Deep Six for many years. He was President of the Military Veterans Museum in Oshkosh.
Visitation and a celebration of Doc’s life will be held on Friday, July 15 from 5:00 to 7:30 pm at Fiss and Bill’s Funeral Home, 865 S. Westhaven Dr., Oshkosh. Visitation will also be held on Saturday, July 16th at 10:00 am at St. Jude the Apostle Church (Sacred Heart), 519 Knapp Street, Oshkosh, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:00 am. Per Doc’s request, please wear red, white or blue to celebrate his life.
