George Hagene's Obituary
George R. Hagene, 95 of Oshkosh, passed away on January 10, 2015 at home. George was born to the late George A. Hagene and Eleanor (Merkel) Hagene on October 13th 1919 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He married Grace Ann Schettl, the love of his life, on April 26th 1947 at Sacred Heart Church in Oshkosh. They had 67 years together and two wonderful children, Julie Ann (Dennis) Adelmeyer and James Alan (Christine)Hagene. They were blessed with six grandchildren and one great grandchild. George enlisted in the Army Air Corp in September of 1940 and served until November of 1945, rising to the rank of Tech Sgt. And had receive a Certificate of Eligibility for Warrant Officer when the war ended. He served as Squadron Supply Sgt a Jefferson Barracks, St Louis, Mo and at Keesler Field, Biloxi, Ms. He then attended school at Chanute Field, Rantoul,Ill and instructed in Radio and Celestial Navigation at Gulfport Field, Ms until the end of the war. He joined Miles Kimball Company after returning from service in 1945 starting as Assistant Office Manager. He later became Merchandise Manager and then Vice President of Merchandising responsible for the purchasing of merchandise and the planning of the catalog. He retired in July of 1985. He was a member of the board of the Catholic Apostoate (later to become Catholic Social Services) serving for many of the 33 years as President of the Fox Cities area board. He was a member of the Catholic War Veterans and the American Legion. He served on the school and parish boards of Sacred Heart Parish. He was a member of the Oshkosh Serra Club since 1965 serving several terms as president and many years as treasurer. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Parish serving as lector, server and communion distributor for 42 years. He also was a long-time volunteer at Mercy Medical Center assisting the Pastoral Care Department, distributing communion to patients and as lector in the Chapel. He was one of the founders of the Oshkosh Rock and Mineral Club and a long time member of the Wisconsin Chippers Club. Birds were his favorite carving subject but he carved animals, Santa's and made many music boxes, most given as gifts to family and friends. He built a summer home on Little Hills Lake and spent much time fishing and relaxing with friends and family. He is survived by his wife Grace, daughter Julie and her husband Dennis Adelmeyer of Oconto, Wisconsin, son James (Christine) Hagene of Caledonia,,Michigan, Grandson Bryan (Kristin Higgins) Adelmeyer of Washington DC, Grandson Colin (Nicci) Adelmeyer of Columbus, Ohio, Grandsons Grant and Joshua Hagene of Caledonia, Michigan, Grand-daughter Erica (Bryan) Rahe of Caledonia,Michigan,Great-grandson Austin, Caledonia, Michigan, Grand-daughter Laura Anderman of Portland, Oregon, Brother-in-law Alvin Schettl or Grand Rapids, Michigan, Sister-in-laws Grace Schettl and Nancy Schettl of Oshkosh, Wisconsin and many nieces, nephews and cousins. George was preceded in death by his parents, George A and Eleanor Hagene and sisters Dolores and Georgiana, father-in-law Joseph E Schettl and mother-in-law Anna, Sister-in-law Lucille and her husband Charles Diehl, Sister-in-law Kathrine and her husband Robert Johnson, Sisters-in-law Jane and Helen Schettl. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 11:00 am, at St Jude the Apostle Parish, Sacred Heart Site, corner of 6th and Knapp st, the Rev William Van de Kreeke officiating. Family and friends may call at the Church Tuesday from 9am until the time of services.. In lieu of flowers a Memorial has been established.
