Gloria A. Hughes' Obituary
Gloria Ann (Scheller) Hughes, 93 died at Prairie Place, Ripon, WI on July 10, 2026.
Gloria, a loving wife, mother and grandmother was born June 16, 1933 to Walter and Esther (Matulle) Scheller in VanDyne, WI. Gloria attended VanDyne Schools. Gloria married William (Bill) G. Hughes on September 15, 1950 at the New Bethel E&R Church in Black Wolf. They met in the summer of 1948 at the VanDyne Free Shows. In 1950 they purchased a farm in the Town of Nekimi.
Gloria was active with her homemakers group, church activities at the late Bethany UCC in Oshkosh where she was a charter member. Gloria then joined Our Saviour’s UCC in Ripon, WI. She loved their yearly vactioning in Eagle River with their friends. Later they enjoyed visiting family in Texas and attending WI State Holstein Conventions. Gloria especially loved attending Christian Women’s yearly meetings. Along with being a busy hardworking farm wife who would lend a helping hand to anyone, Gloria worked as a waitress for many years and later as a nanny. Mom and Dad were foster parents for 15 children. Our mom was a loving, involved mother. She loved to garden, cook, bake, play cards and to have coffee with friends.
Survived by children: Linda Friddell, Tomball, TX; Joe (Kathy) Hughes, Oshkosh, WI; Ben (Jane) Hughes, Pickett, WI; Tina (Mark Adamski) Hughes, Oshkosh, WI; son-in-law Bruce Blechl, Waukau, WI. Grandchildren: Jeremiah (Jennifer) Friddell, Carencro, LA; Josh (Melanie) Friddell, Magnolia, TX; Leah (Devin) Dipprey, College Station, TX; Laurie Hughes, Oshkosh, WI; Joseph (Julie) Hughes, Nanticoke, PA; Jonathan Hughes, Oshkosh, WI; Michael (Kimberly) Hughes, Pickett, WI; Courtney (Michael) Halsey, Oshkosh, WI; Oz Hughes, Oshkosh, WI; Zach Lemmon, Minneapolis, MN; 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter.
Other survivors include sisters Janice Gerlach, Sparks, NV and Mary Lou (Norman) Wilkins, Madera, CA; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Rocky Lee Hughes, daughter Tammy Blechl, son-in-law Roland Friddell, sisters and brothers-in-law Bernie and Chully Hackbarth and Betty and Ray Schommer, brother and sister-in-law Jake and Pearl Scheller, brother-in-law Gerald Gerlach, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dick and Elaine Hughes, and many close friends.
The family would like to thank the Prairie Place staff for their years of care; the care and support of the Hospice staff and special thanks to Laurie Zwicker and Jenna Pauly. It gives our family comfort knowing that our Mother and Grandmother is now painfree and in Our Lord’s loving care.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026 at 11:30 am at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 1306 Michigan Street, Oshkosh, WI. Visitation will be held at the church starting at 9:30 am until the time of service. Rev. Kevin Mundell will officiate.
Private burial will be in Scheller Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
