Grace Ann Hagene (Schettl)
Grace Ann Hagene, age 98 of Oshkosh, passed away in Oshkosh at Gabriel’s Villa. She was born on August 20, 1923, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Joseph E. Schettl and Anna Grace Schettl (Obersteiner).
She had two sisters, Kathrine, and Lucille and three brothers, Alvin, Joseph, and Gerald Schettl.
She married George Robert Hagene the love of her life on April 26th,1947 at Sacred Heart Church in Oshkosh. They had 67 wonderful years together.
She is survived by, two children Julie Ann Adelmeyer (Dennis), and James Alan Hagene (Christine), six grandchildren, Bryan (Kristin) Adelmeyer, Colin (Nicci) Adelmeyer, Erica (Brian) Rahe, Laura Anderman, Grant, and Joshua Hagene, four great grandchildren, Austin Rahe, Dennis and Milo Adelmeyer and Delilah Hagene and many nieces and nephews.
Mom attended Sacred Heart Grade School and Oshkosh High School, graduating in 1940. She then attended beauty college and worked as a beautician. She later worked for Miles Kimball Company as an assistant to Alberta Kimball where she met George.
Mom became active in the church and at Sacred Heart School and Lourdes High School. She was a member of the Christian Women’s groups at both St. Vincent and later at Sacred Heart Church. She was a Blue Bird and Camp Fire Girl’s leader. She also was active 42 years at Mercy Hospital as a volunteer making paper flowers for the gift shop and tray favors for patients’ trays for special occasions and was on the committee that compiled the Mercy Hospital Cookbook.
Mom loved to dance and especially loved ice skating. She loved the change of seasons and traveling. She was an excellent seamstress and She loved knitting and crocheting. There was always a project in the works. She took up ceramics and we have many gifts that she made for us that we will always cherish. Mom enjoyed spending summer weekends at the family cottage on Little Hills Lake. She learned how to swim because even though she was afraid of the water she wanted to be able to keep us save. She was her grandchildren’s biggest fan and could be found cheering them on at sporting events. She loved to read, play bridge, and working crossword puzzles. We spent many nights while growing up playing UNO and Yahtzee. Who had time for homework? She was a wonderful cook and especially loved making German dishes from recipes handed down from her mother. When dad retired, she kept him busy bike riding, golfing, traveling, and card playing with friends. They even took painting classes. Mom was always willing to learn new things and she used her kindle and tablet almost every day after moving to Gabriel’s Villa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Lucille Diehl, and Kathrine Johnson, brothers Joseph, Alvin and Gerald Schettl, sisters-in-law Dolores Hagene, Jane, Helen and Nancy Schettl and brothers-in-law Charles Diehl and Robert Johnson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at 11:00 am, at St. Jude the Apostle parish, Sacred Heart Site, corner of 6th and Knapp St., the Rev. Kevin Ripley will be the celebrant. Family and friends may call at the church Tuesday from 10 am until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in the name of Miravada (Gabriel’s Villa). The staff at Gabriel’s Villa and Moments Hospice provided a loving and caring environment, especially in her last days.
