Dearest Grandpa-
I can really wax poetic in moments like this but really that ain’t your style. Anytime I think about what to say all I can think of is memories. Little snippets of a childhood that seem so long ago but wasn’t that long ago.
Pall Mall cigarettes, non-filtered of course. Watching Grandma iron your uniform while Reading Rainbow was on TV. Kickball-first-base-bunny nest in the neighbor’s back yard. Garden gnomes and sitting on the back porch on those metal chair that were once so orange.
The farm. Endless bouquets of fresh flowers in the playhouse. Catching toads and fireflies under a weeping willow. Hickory nuts and fresh pears off the tree. Tire swings, weather logs, old Coke bottles and sneaking into the old barn. Dust-bomb fights. Fishing off the pier at Wendt’s. Going to the egg lady and playing with weird looking cats.
Apple Lane. Walking on sea shells, mother-of-pearl. Blue room and rust room and watching musicals in the basement. Quiet moments by the lake.
These memories come back so vivid it seems like yesterday I was that little girl. Moments I will hold onto. Memories you created for me to hold onto. All the good stuff. Only the good stuff.
My promise to you is I will try to be that memory-maker. I will fill this life with the goodness you gave.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I love you always.
Your grateful Granddaughter
Sues.
