Harold Carpenter's Obituary
Harold J. Carpenter –Oshkosh, WI
June 22, 1927-August 10, 2013
Our father, Harold J. Carpenter, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning August 10, 2013 at Evergreen Care Center. He was born to Elizabeth and Fred Carpenter on Regent St. in Madison, WI. The youngest of seven children, his brothers and sisters were; Joe, Agnes, Dorothy, Fritz, Roman, and Betty. He and our mother, Betty Carpenter, were married on September 13, 1952 in Madison. Together they raised ten children; Teri Carpenter, Larry(Mary) Carpenter, Carol(Nels) Naslund, Joan(Bill)Pike, Mary(John)Kupsch, Kathy McCallister, Paula(Chris) Brown, Margaret(Doug )Gerth, Helen(Mark)Lira, and Lois(Mickey)Noone. Together there are 13 grandchildren in the family.
Harold was a man of many talents. He was a very good athlete. He played basketball for the 1945 Madison West State High School Championship team as well as playing varsity tennis in high school. He served in the Navy Sea Beas at the tail end of WWII on the island of Guam. He played tennis for the UW Badgers after the war and graduated in 1951 with a degree in Art Education. He was also a very talented artist and did well in numerous state art contests. He sang Barbershop in various quartets and choruses for many years and really treasured the friendships he made-thanks Jack.
Harold and Betty moved to Oshkosh in 1954 and started Harold Carpenter Overhead Door Co. and they worked together for many years building the business. Harold retired in January, 2011, at that time his daughter Lois took over ownership of the business. He worked down at the shop until 2012. Our father worked hard to give us a roof over our heads and food on the table, as well as a Christian centered family life. He was a serious man who also had a sense of humor and kept that sense of humor until his illness took over.
To honor our father’s wishes, no memorial service will take place. However, he would like to thank all of the people who touched his life and those he helped during his journey on this earth. A memorial fund will be established and the proceeds will support the Alzheimer’s Association. A special thanks to the staff at Evergreen for the great care you provided.
Pa, we thank you for a wonderful life!
