Herbert Ziebell's Obituary
Herbert G. "Zeke" Ziebell, age 84, of Oshkosh, died Sunday January 20, 2013 at Bethel Home. He was born in Oshkosh on November 15, 1928 the son of the late Herbert H. and Anna Abendroth Ziebell. Herb married Marcella A. Demler on April 26, 1952 in Oshkosh.
For about thirty years Herb did construction work as a cement finisher, and worked for several local contractors, he then worked for the city of Oshkosh for twentyfour years in its Parks Department until his retirement on June 1, 1990. He loved the outdoors and working with wood, and building model airplanes. Herb was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, AARP, and The American Legion Post #70. He was in The U.S. Army, in 759 M.P. BN in Berlin, Germany and airlift in 1947-1948 during the Berlin Blockade. Herb was recalled in 1950-1951 during the Korean War, G CO. 23rd Rct. 2nd Infantry Division. In February of 1951 he was surrounded by five Chinese Army's at Chip-Yong-Ni, he was also at Punch Bowl, Heartbreak Ridge, Bloody Ridge, and Pork Chop Hill. He was a squad leader of a machine gun squad as a Staff Sergeant. Medals awarded to Herb were Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, Combat Infantry-Badge, Distinguished Unit Emblem, with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal,, and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Badge, Korean War service Medal awarded by Korean Government on 50th Anniversary, Korean Defense Service Medal, and The WW II Victory Medal. He was also awared two Honorable Discharges.
Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Marcella Ziebell, of Oshkosh, one daughter, Gloria J. (Jack) Wendler, Ripon, one son Michael J. (Kim) Ziebell, Tigerton, one granddaughter, April (Kevin) Maas, three great-granddaughter, Courtney, Taylor, Erin, one brother, Robert (Mary) Ziebell, and one sister, Helen (Lawrence) Abraham. Herb is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Willie Ziebell.
Funeral services for Herb will be held in Fiss & Bills Funeral Home (865 S Westhaven) on Wednesday January 23, at 7:00PM with the Rev. William Van DeKreeke officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Memorial Park. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4:00PM until the hour of services. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established.
Herb's family wishes to thank a very special niece, Darlene (Bubbles), for all the love you have given, Dr. Matt Fischer, his nurse, Karie for all the years of care you gave Herbert, we don't know what we would have done without both of you, Bethel Home, karie Chapman, Heather, Sara, Mary Ann, Kathy, Julie, Dan, Herb's 'buddies" Chaplain Brian, Peppie, Yoro,and all the rest of the care givers whose names we never got to know, Aurora Hospice Jody Amy, Kathy, Bev. and most of all Tammy who truely is a special gift from God, as Herb would always say "Thank you" to everyone.
