Juanita Salas' Obituary
Juanita Salas, (nee Haverlock), age 94, of Oshkosh, WI, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, April 25, 2016. Juanita was born on December 13, 1921 in Chicago, IL a daughter of Anna (nee Dubinikas) and James Haverlock. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Haverlock. She married Joe J. Salas on November 24, 1955 in Chicago. She is survived by her husband Joe, of Oshkosh; a son, Joseph J. Salas of Oshkosh and a daughter, Janice A. Salas and her husband, Alberto M. Benitez, of Alexandria, Virginia.
Juanita was a loving wife and mother and up until her late 80s she enjoyed round dancing with Joe and playing the piano. She also loved painting, needlepoint, cooking, and sewing. In addition, she played golf and bridge with her friends. She had various jobs in Chicago before she married Joe, including working at Wallace Press, E&J Railroad, and as a comptometer operator with the Chicago Board of Education. Juanita attended Lucy Flower High School in Chicago. She never stopped learning and was a voracious reader and worked daily crossword puzzles up until shortly before her death.
A gathering for family and friends will be held in the Fiss & Bills-Poklasny Funeral Home, 865 S. Westhaven Dr. in Oshkosh on Sunday, May 1, 2016 from 1p.m. until 3 p.m. at which time a service remembering her life will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation in Juanita’s name to the Oshkosh Area Humane Society or the charity of your choice. The family would especially like to thank all of the wonderful caregivers with Valley VNA Senior Services, Home Care Assistance and the Affinity Hospice staff who helped make the last months of Juanita’s life as comfortable as possible. A very special thank you to Jeanne Schneider for the assistance she provided to Juanita over the last few years.
