I knew Kerry all my life. He lived right across the street. When I was really little he would pull me around in my Radio Flyer red wagon or we'd ride double on this goofy red tractor that I had. Later we'd ride bikes out to one of the local creeks to fish or catch crayfish or just mess around. I was about four years younger than him and I always appreciated that he would hang out with me and not just blow me off. He was that kind of guy, one who would take time out to hang with a goofy little kid and make his day.
When he returned from Vietnam, we attended UW-Oshkosh together and had a couple classes together but spent a lot of time together in the student union, having a couple beers after class. One summer we spent a lot of time playing tennis in our spare time and following it up with ice cream at Dairy Queen or root beer at A&W. And who could forget those keg parties at the apartment above the Beachcomber! Fun times!!
Eventually, he met Vickie and got married and became a father and I moved to St. Louis and we couldn't hang out but we still stayed in touch. After about six years I moved back to Oshkosh and we got to hang out again, mostly playing softball for the Classic Example. What a trip that was and what a cast of characters on that team! More fun times and good memories!
I guess all this reminiscing is my way of saying he was a great guy, funny and smart, and I enjoyed every moment we spent together. I'm going to miss him terribly. My condolences to Vickie, Jeremy, and Sandy and the rest of the family.
