Lorraine M. Spiering
Lorraine Mary Spiering, age 88 of Oshkosh, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013. She was born October 31, 1924, in Oshkosh to John and Elizabeth Gronowski Nowicki. She married Harry E. Spiering on February 3, 1951, in Oshkosh at St. Josaphat Parish. He preceded her in death on August 8, 1987.
Before her marriage, Lorraine was employed in Oshkosh at Robert Brand and Sons, Oshkosh Trunk and Luggage Co., and the Paine Lumber Co. offices in the payroll and bookkeeping departments.
During World War II, Lorraine gave blood to the American Red Cross and spent many hours rolling bandages for the Red Cross. In 1944, she traveled to San Diego to visit her sister and took a position with Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation (Convair) in the office of the Contract Department. She received the Army and Navy Production Award Emblem for her work there with contributions to the war effort.
Following her marriage she and her husband made their home in Waupun for 31 years, where they belonged to St. Joseph Parish. While in Waupun Lorraine worked for the National Rivet Co., the Hutch - James Shoe Co. and for the Carnation Can Division in the bookkeeping and payroll department for eighteen years.
After her husband's retirement, they returned to Oshkosh. She enjoyed traveling and creating albums of all their trips. She was in forty-eight states and throughout the Provinces of Canada. They always took her Father or a niece, nephew, or great - niece or nephew along on a trip.
Lorraine loved to spend time with members of her family and friends, often to share her home baked cookies. Her favorite card games were cribbage and sheepshead, and she also enjoyed a game of Scrabble. She belonged to the Ladies Society at St. Josaphat's Parish and enjoyed helping with many bake sales, as well as putting together the parish newsletter for mailing. In more recent years, Lorraine was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Parish, Oshkosh.
Surviving are her sisters, Florence Ebersberger, Rothschild, WI, Josephine (Edward) Jeske, Crystal River, FL, and Rosemary (Harold) Brickham, Hartland, WI, sister-in-law, Lucille Nowicki, Oshkosh, WI, nieces and nephews, along with many other relatives and friends.
Proceeding her in death were her parents, John and Elizabeth, her husband, Harry, her brothers, Ralph J. Nowicki and John P. Nowicki, Jr., and brother-in-law Richard Ebersberger.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 19, 2013 at Sacred Heart Church, 519 Knapp Street, Oshkosh, at 11 a.m., with the Reverend Matthew Simonar officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass. Interment will be held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery following the Mass.
The family would like to thank the staff of Affinity Hospice as well as the staff members of Eden Meadows Rehabilitation and Suites who cared for Lorraine over the past several weeks. Funeral arrangements are being provided by Fiss and Bills-Poklasny Funeral Home.
