Phillip Alexander Charley's Obituary
After a courageous battle with cancer, Phillip Alexander (Hayes) Charley passed away on October 21, 2022, at Ascension Mercy Hospital in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Phil was born on May 18, 1946, to the late Joseph and Madge (Bloedel) Hayes. Madge married the late Clarence Charley in 1951 and Clarence adopted Phil shortly thereafter. Phil received his education in Iowa up to and through a BS degree from Iowa State University. He later received an MS degree in History from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He worked with the Oshkosh Police Department for 33 years and retired as a Detective II in 2009.
Phil married his wife Linda (McDowell) Charley on August 16, 1969, in Gilbert, Iowa. They were blessed with two daughters: Donna Charley-Johnson (Chad), and Heather Charley. His wife, both daughters, and a grandson, Tucker Johnson, survive. Phil is further survived by five siblings: Carole Meinders (Mike), Roger Charley (Nancy), Joseph Hayes, Jacqueline Butler, and Timothy Hayes (Marci). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Phil enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, goose hunting, American history, and traditional woodworking. He was also an avid reader.
Cremation has taken place and a remembrance service will be held at Fiss and Bills-Poklasny Funeral Home (865 S Westhaven Dr.) with Phil’s brother, Roger Charley, officiating on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at 11 am. A time of visitation will be held from 10 am until the service begins. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Phil’s name to the Van Dyne Sportsmen Club or the Oshkosh Police Benevolent Association.
