Richard M. “Dick” Payne, age 82, of Oshkosh, died peacefully on Tuesday February 23, 2016 at his home surrounded by family. He was born in Chicago IL., on December 18, 1933 the son of the late John and Bessie Sourek Payne. In his early years Dick enjoyed drag racing, building hot rods and fast cars. In 1955 he married Norlene Sandbeck at St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church in Oshkosh. Dick was drafted in 1956 serving his country in the U.S. Army as a Surveyor. It was while serving in the Army in Germany that his daughter Debbie was born in 1957. After his tour he went into business for himself, successfully owning and operating R.M. Payne Excavating. He retired in 2001 and spent his retirement years with Norlene. Throughout the years Dick enjoyed restoring antique cars, hunting, fishing, camping, and enjoying being with family at their Florence WI cabin in the woods. He will be remembered as a loving and talented family man who could fix or build most anything, and spent many hours creating, sharing and enjoying photography. Many people enjoyed sharing in Dick and Norlene’s small apple orchard. He was a member of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Oshkosh.
Dick is survived by his wife; Norlene Payne, of Oshkosh, one daughter; Debra (Bob) Knudsen, one grandson; Bobby (Lori) Knudsen, one granddaughter; Katie (Pete) Downs, four great-grandchildren; Summer, Parker, Chloe, and Evan Downs all of Oshkosh, one brother; Gerald (Pat Toms) Payne, Oshkosh, siters-in-law; Rosalind Buck of Omro, Nona Erickson of Omro, Geraldine (Richard) Hammer of Texas, nieces and nephews; Terry (Dennis) Orseske, Brian (Lori) Payne, Lynn Payne, Glenda (Nick) Payne, Mellissa Begrow, Tabetha Payne, Sara Payne, Tracy Buck, Sandra (Chris) VanFossen, Nina (Leroy) Bascue, Tony (Roxann) Kolodzik, Cindy (Jeff) Schuster, Robin (Dennis) Lane, Darin Kolodzik, Travis (Kristy) Kolodzik, Rick (Gail) Sandbeck, Renee Sandbeck Jacob, Kathy Hammer-Salas, Tracy Ulbing, Rich (Angela) Hammer. Dick is further survived by many cousins, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one brother; John Patrick “Jack” Payne, one infant sister; Patricia Ellen Payne, one nephew; John Michael “Jack” Payne, four brothers-in-law; Jerome Sandbeck, Gerald Buck, Ken Erickson, and Lawrence Kolodzik, and two sisters-in-law, Lee Payne, and Lorna Payne Linder.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday February 27, at 11:00 AM in St. Raphaels Catholic Church with the Rev. Edward Looney officiating. Burial will be in riverside Cemetery. Family and friends may call at Fiss & Bills-Poklasny Funeral Home (865 S. Westhaven) on Friday from 4:00-7:00 PM where there will be a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Family and friends may also call at the church on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the hour of services.
