Sister Marie Hilgers' Obituary
Sister Marie Hilgers died on December 29, 2012, she had just turned 103 years old on November 7th. Sister Marie was a great Vikings fan since she was originally from Minnesota. She had just recently recieved a hat and a plaque as well as some other items signed by some of the Viking players in honor of her 103rd birthday. Sister Marie was born on November 7, 1909 to Albert and Frances Hilgers in Eagle Lake, MN. She was one of six children. She grew up on her parent's farm near Mankato, MN and she helped her family by working on the family farm. She joined the religious community of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother on October 18, 1939 in Milwaukee, WI and professed her First Vows on August 12, 1942 and her Final Vows on August 12, 1947. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee on August 19, 1967; her Golden Jubilee on August 20, 1989; her 60th Jubilee on AOctober 17, 1999 and her 70th Jubilee on August 12, 2012. Sister Marie took nurses training at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Oshkosh, WI in 1942-1945. In 1951 she obtained a B.S. Degree in Nursing at Marquette University in Milwaukee. She served at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh and later went to Mankato, MN where she was asked to set up the pharmacy at the newly built St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato in 1953. In 1983 Sister Marie retired from her employment at the then Immanuel-St.Joseph Hospital but continued to do volunteer at the hospital. Later she spent her retirement years at the Mother of Sorrows Convent in Milwaukee, WI. She came to Franciscan Court in Oshkosh on October 17, 1989. Homecoming for Sister Marie will be held at the Franciscan Courts Chapel on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. The Mass of Resurrection will be on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. The Rev.
