Sister Mary Flora Scheurer,
Sister Mary Flora Scheurer was called to her eternal reward on March 31, 2015 at Franciscan Courts, Oshkosh, WI. She was born October 20, 1916 in Mankato, MN, to parents John and Seraphine May Scheurer and given the name Lucy May. Sister and her twin brother were one of three sets of twins.
Sister Flora entered the religious congregation of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother on September 3, 1932 at Our Lady of Sorrows Convent in Milwaukee, WI. She entered the novitiate and was given the name Mary Flora on August 12, 1934. She professed her first vows on August 12, 1936 and final vows on August 12, 1941. Sister celebrated her 75th Jubliee in 2011.
Sister Flora earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, WI and furthered her education at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI.
She used her educational talents as a teacher in Tomahawk, WI, Milwaukee, WI, Bakerville, WI, Villanueva, NM, Esterville, IA and Wichita, KS. Her ministries took her to Barbados, West Indies where she served as Director of Novices.
Sister Flora retired at Franciscan Courts, Oshkosh, WI in November of 1994. She remained active in volunteering at Fr. Carr’s Place, preparing canceled stamps for the missions and sharing her artistic gifts by creating beautiful craft items knowing that they could be sold and these monies benefit the poor. She shared her deep spirituality by assisting in the chapel as sacristan.
As a true Franciscan she loved animals. Sister Flora will be remembered as the Sister who walked the large Bernese Mountain dog along Westhaven drive. Later her faithful companion “Nemo”, a dog from the Pound, gave her and others great joy as he could perform many tricks. Sister Flora will be missed by her religious Sisters and friends.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday April 7, 2015 at 11am at the Franciscan Courts Chapel at 815 S. Westhaven Drive Oshkosh, WI 54904. Father William Kuhr will be the celebrant. Sister Flora’s Homecoming will take place in the Chapel on Monday April 6, 2015 at 4pm. Committal services will be held at Riverside Catholic Cemetery, Oshkosh, WI
