Sister Mary Leonilda Nieberle's Obituary
Sister Leonilda Nieberle, age 88, died at the Franciscan Courts, Oshkosh WI, on April 22, 2015, She was born in Kaldorf, Bavaria, Germany, Diocese of Eichstadt. daughter of Joseph and Maria Anna ( Steller) Nieberle on May 26, 1927 and given the name Karolina Nieberle. Sister entered the novitiate of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother in Abenberg, Germany on August 12, 1948 and given the name Sister M. Leonilda, and pronounced her first vows there in 1950. She came to the United States in 1951 and became a United States citizen on March 6, 1957. In Milwaukee, WI on Aug 12, 1955 she pronounced her final vows. Her ministry took her to Denville, NJ where in 1975 she made her Silver Jubilee and in 2000 her Golden Jubilee. In 2010 she celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in Oshkosh , WI Sister Leonilda enjoyed developing her culinary skills, sharing her love of food with her sisters in school convents in Cedarburg, WI. and Bakersville, WI. She received special education in nutrition and food preparation to meet the needs of patients in hospitals. In 1977 she completed a certificate course for Food Service in St.. Louis. Sister was transferred to St. Clare Medical Center, Denville, NJ where she worked in food service. Later she served the sisters dietary needs at Our Lady Of Sorrows Convent, Denville, NJ. Sister moved to Our Lady of Sorrows Convent and later to St. Clare Convent both located in Broken Arrow , Oklahoma in 2002. She continued her ministry of visiting the residents in the retirement center. In January 2010 Sister Leonilda retired to Franciscan Courts, Oshkosh, WI. Sister enjoyed kitting and attending to chapel and other house plants. Sister spent time praying the Rosary with the elderly sisters and often said, I spend time in the Chapel to keep Jesus company. Sister will be missed by Sister Laetare Nieberle, her sister, and by her religious Sisters and friends. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday April 27, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Franciscan Courts Chapel. At 815 S. Westhaven Drive, Oshkosh, WI. Father William Kuhr will be the celebrant. Sister Leonilda Homecoming service will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday April 26 in the Chapel. Committal services will be held at Riverside Catholic Cemetery, Oshkosh, WI.
