Sister Catherine Mary Kaufmann's Obituary
Sister Catherine Mary Kaufmann died on September 3, 2013 at the age of 82. She was born on February 9, 1931 in Oshkosh, to parents Leopold and Katherine (Frenen) Kaufmann and was given the name Nina Josephine. She was one of seven children. Nina entered the religious community of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother on January 7, 1949 in Milwaukee, WI at Mother of Sorrows Convent. She entered the novitiate on August 12, 1949 and then given the name Mary Emeline. She professed First Vows on August 12, 1951 and her Final Vows on August 12, 1956. Sister celebrated her Silver Jubilee on August 15, 1976; her Golden Jubilee on January 1, 1999; and her 60th Jubilee on September 18, 2011. In between times, in 1973 she had transferred to a Benedictine Order and had taken the name Sister Catherine Mary. In 1978, she re-entered the community of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother. Sister Catherine served as a teacher and musician in various places in Kansas, Iowa, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Minnesota, West Indies, and Oklahoma. Later she worked in the healthcare field in various capacities after taking some nursing courses at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh. Besides taking some nursing courses, Sister had attended Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, WI. Sister Catherine came to Franciscan Courts in Oshkosh in 1989. She worked in various capacities as a nursing assistant, receptionist, organist and a driver. As Sister's health declined she became very incapacitated. The nursing staff was very caring and loving to her. Sister Catherine had a great sense of humor. She loved music. Besides playing the organ and piano, she played the accordion. She loved people and liked to socialize.
Sister is survived by a brother, Denis Kaufmann of Oshkosh; a sister, Sister Leopold of Sinsinawa, Wisconsin. Sister Catherine will be missed by all of the Sisters and staff at the Franciscan Courts.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held for Sister Catherine on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Franciscan Courts Convent Chapel in Oshkosh. Homecoming for Sister Catherine will be at 4:00 p.m. TODAY, Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. Burial will be in Riverside Catholic Cemetery.
