Sister M. Scholastica Harrer's Obituary
Sister M. Scholastica Harrer died peacefully at Franciscan Courts on September 18, 2014 at the age of 96. She is survived by her sister, Sister Urban Harrer who also lives at Franciscan Courts. Sister Mary Scholastica was born on November 3, 1917 in Eibach, Germany to parents Ludwig and Walburga (Lenz) Harrer. She was given the name Margareta. She was one of twelve children, four boys and eight girls. In her family, six of the girls entered the congregation of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother. On September 26, 1936 Margereta entered the congregation of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother in Abenberg, Germany. She became a novice on August 12, 1937 and was given the name Mary Scholastica. On December 21, 1938 she came to the United States and continued her novitiate at Mother of Sorrows motherhouse in Milwaukee, WI. On August 12, 1929 she professed First Vows, and professed Final Vows on August 12, 1944. On September 7, 1944 she obtained her citizenship in the United States. Sister Scholastica celebrated her Silver Jubilee on August 12, 1954; her Golden Jubilee on January 1, 1989; her 60th Jubilee on January 1, 1999 and her 70th Jubilee on September 20, 2009. Last month, August 10th she celebrated her 75th Jubilee.
After completing nurses training at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1944 in Oshkosh, Sister served as a Registered Nurse in Estherville, IA; Truth or Consequences NM; Mankato, MN; and lastly at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Wabasha, MN where she worked in surgery and the ER. She also served on the Board of St. Elizabeth Hospital. Sister Scholastica would speak with great fondness of her days in New Mexico. One incident she said the Doctor called her up at 2:00 a.m. saying “I need you right away in the emergency room.” Sister said she was a “jack of all trades.” She cared for the poor. She also helped women giving birth and trained them to know what to do when they went home. Sister would even make visits at their homes to see how they were doing and even brought food for the kids. Sister Scholastica came to Franciscan Courts in 1999. She will be missed by everyone at Franciscan Courts.
Homecoming, (wake) will be Monday, September 22, 2014 at SSM Franciscan Courts Chapel 815 S. Westhaven Drive at 4:00 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel with the Rev. Fr. Michael Warden as celebrant.
