Verona D. Schneider's Obituary
Verona D. Schneider passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, at the age of 95. She was born on April 15, 1930, in Oshkosh, the daughter of the late Keith and Cora (Frerks) Swisher of Winneconne. Verona grew up in Winneconne. She had many happy memories of her school years and time spent with her grandparents, Sophia and August Frerks, at their resort on Lake Winneconne. She was a 1947 graduate of Winneconne High School (salutatorian) and a 1950 graduate of the Mercy School of Nursing. Following graduation, she worked as a nurse at Winnebago State Hospital until she started a family in 1959. Verona married John (Jack) Schneider of Oshkosh on September 13, 1952, at St. Peter’s Church. They made their home in Oshkosh for over 57 years until Jack’s passing in 2010. Together they raised two children and led an active life in service to the community. When her children were older, Verona returned to work as a psychiatric nurse for the Winnebago County Community Support Program. She was a hospice volunteer for Mercy Medical Center for over 17 years, served on the advisory board for the Oshkosh Senior Center, and was an active member of St. Peter’s Parish. Verona had a love for life. She was the instigator and planner of trips and adventures involving family, friends, and co workers. Summers at Long Lake, downhill and cross country skiing, golfing, and visiting new places were among her favorite activities. She organized countless golf trips with friends to South Carolina, Arizona, and Door County, and was a member of the Lakeshore Ladies Golf League for over 50 years, where she made many lifelong friends. Always the caregiver, Verona made it possible for Jack to remain at home when his health faltered later in life. She was also always available to her friends for rides and support whenever they needed her.
Verona is survived by her son, William (Lizbeth) Schneider; three grandchildren, Lee (Vivien) Schneider, Ann (Ben) Berg, and Jack Schneider; and three great grandchildren, Louise Schneider, Cora Schneider, and Rita Schneider. She is also survived by her brother, James (Carole) Swisher, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Schneider; her daughter, Barbara Schneider; her parents, Keith Swisher and Cora McKellips; her brother, Gary Swisher; and her in laws, Lawrence Schneider, Lee Schneider, George Schneider, Marie Schneider, Josephine Schneider, Margaret and Gene Krumenauer, and Gordon and Nancy Schneider.
The family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers, love, and support. A special thank you to the nursing and care staff at Evergreen Retirement Community, along with Julie Berndt and Angie Luck, for their kindness and companionship over the years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Worship Center in Evergreen Retirement Community, 1130 N. Westfield St., Oshkosh, with Father Jerry Pastors officiating. Visitation will take place from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM. A luncheon will follow for all friends and family in attendance.
