Philip Florio Jr.'s Obituary
Philip Florio, Jr., age 97, passed away on November 9, 2023. Philip was born in Herrin, Illinois on June 29, 1926. He was the son of Philip and Vivian Florio (Hindman). He attended the Murphysboro schools and graduated from Murphysboro High School in 1944. Since World War II was raging, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and after basic training at Keesler AFB, he was sent to Radio School at Scott AFB. Upon graduation, he was transferred to Tulln Air Base in Vienna, Austria. When WW II ended, he returned to the U.S. and joined the Air Force Reserve while attending Southern Illinois University. When the Korean conflict began, he was sent to the Air Force Officer Candidate School at Lackland AFB, Texas. His first assignment was to eastern France with the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing. Thirty years later, he served with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.. In 1949, he married Elizabeth A. Murphy, also from Murphysboro, Illinois. The union produced five children: Judith (Robert), Jane (William), Tony (Jane), Mark (deceased) and Elizabeth (Angelo). He has seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Upon retirement, Philip and Elizabeth returned to southern Illinois and purchased a farm where they enjoyed the beauty of nature. After relocating to Oshkosh, Wisconsin to live near their youngest daughter, Elizabeth passed away and Philip continued to reside in Oshkosh.
Funeral services for Philip will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 11 am in the Fiss & Bills-Poklasny Funeral Home, 865 S. Westhaven Drive in Oshkosh. A time of visitation and gathering will be from 10 am until the time of service. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery with full military honors to be accorded by the United Veterans Honor Guard.
